Your Monthly Property Market Analysis Success Tip from Australia’s Leading Property Market Analyst, John Lindeman.
Hi it’s John here with this little video about pets. We’ve had pets for thousands of years, whether they are dogs, cats, snakes, or birds. In some cases, they’ve become valuable members of our families. Over two-thirds of Australian households have got a furry, scaly, or a feathered member of the family.
So how can you look after your pet’s welfare after you’ve passed away? The notorious Queen of Mean, Leona Helmsley left $12M for the care of her dog, a little terrier called Trouble. Countess Carlotta Liebenstein of Germany left her entire estate of $80M to a German Shepherd dog named Gunther III.
In Australia, we can’t do things like that because pets are actually property. So while you can own a cat or a dog, that cat or dog can’t own anything else. What you can do is you can leave a bequest in your will.
You can say, “I would like this person to look after my pet, and they’ll be looked after and cared for.” You can leave many for that purpose, or you can actually set up a trust. The problem with a trust—which is in the name of your pet, for the benefit of your pet—is that people who run the trust must be willing to take on that responsibility.
The most important thing of all is to make sure you’ve got someone in mind who can look after your pet after you’ve gone, and they’re willing to do so.
