How do you wake up?

I believe that how you wake up in the morning pretty much determines how the rest of your day will progress. Wake up enthusiastic, and you’ll feel the energy throughout the day. Wake up grumpy, and everything around you, including yourself, will be grumpy.

And if I get to choose, I’d rather wake up happy and go about the rest of my day. Besides, how you wake up affects your morning routine. And your morning routine makes up a fraction of your day-to-day, if not your eventual success in what you do.

So to stir that inspiration in you, let me share the morning routines of 10 of the world’s most successful people.

RICHARD BRANSON, VIRGIN GROUP

Branson takes an early swim or kite surfs in the morning. He then proceeds to have a healthy breakfast. He’s also known to leave the curtains undrawn at night so that he wakes up to the sun at 5:45 AM.

STEVE JOBS, APPLE, PIXAR, and NeXT

Jobs may be remembered for his morning cognitive routine. When he wakes up, he looks at the mirror and asks himself, ‘If today were the last day of my life, would I want to do what I am about to do today?’ If his answer is ‘No’ for many days in a row, he knows that he needs to change something.

ARIANNA HUFFINGTON, HUFFINGTON POST

Huffington starts her day by meditating for 30 minutes. She also makes sure that he gets a lot of sleep at night.

MARK ZUCKERBERG, FACEBOOK

He always wakes up at 8AM except when he works at night. And like Jobs, he’s known to wear the same shirt everyday to avoid having to make one extra decision.

OPRAH WINFREY, HARPO PRODUCTIONS AND OWN

She starts the day by meditating, then hits the treadmill, and eats a healthy meal afterwards.

ELON MUSK, SPACEX AND TESLA MOTORS

Among the people on this list, he’s the only one known to skip breakfast. However, he takes a 5-minute lunch during a meeting. He also exercises once or twice daily.

JEFF BEZOS, AMAZON

Ensures that he gets an 8-hour sleep. In fact, he has a sleeping bag in his office. He’s also known to block Tuesdays and Thursdays from meetings.

JACK MA, ALIBABA

Ma starts his day by doing Tai Chi. At times, his Tai Chi trainer travels with him.

JACK DORSEY, TWITTER AND SQUARE

Dorsey gets up at 5:30AM, meditates, and runs for 6 miles.

Inspired so far? The thing is, you don’t need to have much money to be able to build a winning morning routine. The only things you need are commitment, dedication, persistence, and time.
