What can we all learn from Acres of Diamonds? Stuart Zadel re-tells the story and the lessons we can all learn from the famous speech by Dr. Russell H. Conwell.
In 1843, a man was born in Massachusetts, U.S.A. Unknown to him, his life was destined to have a profound effect on millions of people all over the world. It still does to this day.
ACRES OF DIAMONDS
That man’s name is Dr. Russell H. Conwell, and he delivered his most famous speech ‘Acres Of Diamonds’ more than 6,000 times across the United States.
Acres of Diamonds is a story of a wealthy farmer who had it all: a beautiful wife and family, good health, a great purpose in life, a productive farm, valuable assets, and a good reputation. But he left it behind in an attempt to become the richest man in the world. How? By finding diamond mines.
Sadly, the story does not end well for the farmer. He died penniless in a foreign land having exhausted his savings, all to no avail.
In the meantime, on his farm, the new owner discovers – you guessed it – diamonds. In fact, the most magnificent diamond mine in all of history.
Had the farmer remained at home and dug in his own backyard, under his own crop fields, he would have discovered Acres Of Diamonds – free and clear for the taking.
LESSONS FROM ACRES OF DIAMONDS
Now I wonder: how many of us are making the same mistake today, right now?
Well, we don’t have to. You and me can profit from the farmer’s experience.
How?
Mine your own property
Add value. Perhaps you own a property that can be renovated or subdivided to add value?
Mine your own spare rooms
Have you got a spare bedroom to rent out? Through new services such as AirBnB it’s now possible to rent out your spare rooms by the night for extra income. Perhaps you could rent out a bedroom or two on a short-term basis to a student or worker.
Mine your own information
Re-learn and re-study books, CD’s and information products you have bought. I’m constantly going back over decades of courses, books and information packs that I’ve previously bought so as to re-implement, re-learn and re-design my business and life moving forward.
Mine your own contacts
We all know many more people than we realise, and I bet someone you already know has the solution to the questions/challenges you face right now. People love to help, so let them. What we’re not doing is asking the right questions, staying in touch or flat-out asking for help. Maybe write down the names of 5 people that might be able to help you. Ring them up and have a chat.
Here’s some examples:
- Ask a wealthy person how best to make money.
- Chat with a fit and healthy person what they eat/do on a daily basis to stay in shape.
- Talk to some friends to help find you a life partner.
Of course, it’s always better to ask people who have got the results you are seeking.
There’s no doubt about it, you are so much closer to success than you ever thought. Mine your own ‘Acres Of Diamonds’ right here, and right now.
