Stuart Zadel shares his insights about how to stay energised in the property business.
I want to start with a statement: ‘life requires energy.’ How many out there know what I mean? I guess you probably do- it’s actually quite interesting. How many of you out there have kids? Have families? How many have a job? Have a business? Specifically, how many of you have a property business?
This stuff requires a lot of energy, wouldn’t you agree? In fact, let’s look at your children: do they have energy? Absolutely! When they’re young, they certainly do. We know that life requires energy.
I’m going to put a slight tangent on this for our purposes. Not just life, but the business of property requires energy as well. Additionally, not only does life and property strategies require energy but ‘highest energy wins.’ So anything you can do to increase your energy levels is a very smart thing to do. In fact, give yourself a high five and say, “I knew that!” Did you do it? I hope you did.
HIGHEST ENERGY WINS
If you did that then with the snap and energy of the hand, my question: did your energy go up or down? Most of you will say it went up. Isn’t that funny? You expended energy yet your energy has gone up. Isn’t that interesting? Highest energy does win.
Let’s look at the corollary of this. How many of you have ever had a bad day? How many of you have ever had a bad week? What’s your energy like when you’ve had a bad day or a bad week or you’ve got some bad news? Generally, it goes down. When you’re having a bad day, what happens to your business? Do the results go up or down?
Generally, I would say they go down. What happens to your productivity, be it at work or otherwise? How much do you feel like researching properties, making offers, talking to agents, researching RP data, walking the streets, door knocking and all those things that we need to do to generate leads or interest in our property business, be that renovating, developing, distress buying, share trading, whatever it is you’re doing out there in your life?
Highest energy wins.
When our energy drops, we don’t feel like doing it. You can have the greatest system in the world and all the ‘big picture,’ ‘nitty-gritty’ steps on how to, yet none of this matters if you don’t have any energy management.
What chance do we have as teachers and as educators in any field to get someone to take this concept and and make increased income with that?
I believe it’s entirely possible for you if you have sound mind, reasonable apprehension abilities, and a fair degree of persistence as well.
However, we have to look at how our brain operates. We know humans are creatures of havoc. We also know a lot about the brain from great research- there’s great books out there like ‘The Brain that Rewires Itself’ by Doidge. There’s all these sorts of books coming out about brain research, and what we previously thought about it is not what’s happening at all. The brain is plastic; it is mouldable. It is teachable, coachable, and it is learnable provided you know a few things and how to do them.
HIGHEST ENERGY WINS
One of them I’m going to relate to you is this – highest energy wins. What are we going to do? Anything you can do to increase and keep your energy up is very important. Anything you can do physically. Posture is powerful because you breathe better- oxygen is life. A very powerful thing you can do is improve your posture.
I can feel some of you sitting up right now. Also, anything you do with your diet and hydration! Many, many people are walking around dehydrated as it is right now.
You want some good clean water. Your food, certainly organic where possible, get it free of pesticides. You may choose to eat a whole plant food diet predominating in fresh fruits and vegetables with sprouts, nuts, legumes, and seeds. Eating in a whole, fresh way dramatically improves your energy. But they’re all physical things and they can be implemented over a period of
time.
RAISE YOUR ENERGY
What can you do instantly to raise your energy? Maybe I just gave you a hint with a clap and a clink. This brings me to the next part I want to get to because I want you to: ‘celebrate all wins.’ What does that mean? I’m not saying that you ring up all your friends, have a party, and get drunk tonight. I’m talking about the little things. Anything you can do to physically anchor your success or win is very, very important. It might just be making a fist and saying ‘yes!’ It might be giving yourself a high five or a pat on the back. Or it might be buying yourself a juice or a smoothie or a little treat. Anything you can do, certainly physically in your body, to celebrate that win is good – a jump, a shout, a whoop, a holler.
CELEBRATE WINS
I know it sounds a little bit corny but this is very powerful because if you look at the way we’ve been conditioned through school, it has done its best to beat the creativity and excitement out of you.
In fact, you are only punished for getting things wrong. You were never taught to celebrate your mistakes. This is incredibly powerful if you have children. We are always giving people high fives, high tens, “well done’s.” We’ve actually got a bell in our office for when one of our team has a major win- we ring the bell and all the team comes running and we share that excitement and win with everyone in the office. It’s a physical thing. Good for morale, for you, and for energy.
What else is it doing? It’s literally rewiring your brain- the neurons, the dendrites, the bits and pieces that are attached in certain areas over time literally let go and reattached somewhere. We are establishing what’s called new neural pathways – and I would say ‘pathways for success.’ You need to celebrate all wins.
You’re going to be the police on this. You’ve got to be the judge on this. You’re the one that knows if and when that happens so if you successfully complete a phone call to an agent or a meeting with a buyer or you do some due diligence at counsel, all these things are wins and you should acknowledge them in some way all the time in every single way.
CELEBRATE ALL LEARNING EXPERIENCES
Now, there is one thing that’s even more powerful than all of this. To celebrate all wins is a massive thing to do to rewire your brain but there’s something more powerful and I’m going to share it here. Not only do you celebrate all wins, you want to celebrate all learning experiences. What does that mean?
Some of you out there want to be very precise with your languaging. Some of you out there are using non-supportive terms like ‘mistakes’ and ‘failure.’ We want to get away from those words. We want to call them learning experiences. You learn something every single day if you get out there and have a go and you’re going to have a lot of learning experiences as a property entrepreneur- there is no doubt about it.
Things aren’t always going to go according to plan. This happens every day in every way with every new renovation, every new development, every new distress buy, every trade you place, everything. You’re going to get some learning experiences, but here’s the thing: stop worrying about the things you can’t control and startworrying about the things you can control and do something about it. That is you and your ‘mindset’ and how your brain is wired.
You can start immediately today by celebrating all wins but even more powerful is to celebrate all learning experiences. Literally, when you make a mistake, if you lost a sum of money, all that sort of stuff, most people want to cry, whinge, blame, feel guilty, shame themselves, justify, talk with all their friends.
My question: where does their energy go?
Look, misery likes company. You know that. You’ll find people to empathize and sympathize and all that sort of stuff with you but what’s it doing to your energy?
Generally, it’s taking it down and proving everyone else around you as well. We want to stop that immediately. Alright, we may not be able to undo that mistake or that learning experience but what we can do is we can learn from it. Not just learning from it is very powerful, what’s more important is to celebrate the learning experience.
So yes, you stuff up and literally, throw your fists in the air and go, “Woohoo! Fantastic! I’ve made it out. What can I learn from this? How can I change it? Implement it? How do I improve?”
Because you know as time goes on, as we get to very interesting times right now in the marketplace, financially, and government-wise with the budgets and what’s going on – I suspect there’s going to be a lot of learning experiences out there for all of us. It’s only the most emotionally fit brains out there that are going to survive and thrive in these unique times.
FINAL THOUGHTS
I hope you’ve taken that on board today. It might seem airy fairy, well energy is invisible, it’s intangible but you know it and you feel it as well.
I hope you take this on board. Remember life and the business of property requires energy. Highest energy wins. Do all the things that you can do to increase that.
More importantly, each and every day celebrate all wins. Celebrate with your family, with your children. Even more powerful than that, it’s counter intuitive and it’s counter to the way you’ve been programmed but we need to rewire this whole body mind instrument: I want you to celebrate all learning experiences. Got it? Good.
Now what you’re going to do is go out and do it.
