Motor habits, intellectual habits, and character habits. These are the three types of habits that we have. But which one should we be focusing on? Motor habits are a given. It’s entirely muscular in nature. It make us sit, stand, walk, run, and stand upright. Intellectual habits mainly deal with logic and reasoning. It also involves the processes we employ in decision-making. But another type of habit that we actually have to develop is character habits.
Character habits relate to who we are as human beings. It includes our work ethics, time management practices, and our patterns of emotions. So if we are to establish a good set of character habits, where should we start? I believe that these character habits are essential in our lives. Let’s finish off with the final six.

CLEANING THAT CLUTTER
Did you know that a small clutter here and there unconsciously causes us to be stressed? Just imagine what happens when there’s clutter all around you. This explains why some people’s desks are clean. Although I know people who can work amidst the clutter, the relationship between our minds and our senses is put to the test.
That’s because clutter is a visual stimuli. It inevitably distracts us, effectively taking our thought process off-trail. That means our focus is lost with clutter.
MAKING FRIENDS
In the professional world, this is called ‘networking.’ And this is a major driving force of success. But bear in mind that you build your network not to stack up on the people and job titles that you know. The right mindset is to build a network in order to figure out how you can help enrich the lives of others. Its all about you helping another; businesses helping other businesses; and a network of people helping another network of people.
One important point to keep in mind: when you help others, don’t expect something in return. Networking ought to be based on the spirit of sharing, and giving back in return only at the right time.
BEING SOCIALLY RESPONSIBLE
Give back. The more you give, the more you get in return. But where? Start with your community. Support an advocacy, promote a cause, get involved! It’s not too common for people to say ‘Thank you’ nowadays, but they remember. They remember what you’ve done and how you made them feel.
Your return on investment? Trust, reputation, referrals, you name it. Its when you do good that better opportunities come along. And when they do, they push you a little closer to success.
WORKING OFF A PLAN
So you have this vision of being the most successful person in the world. The question is, how exactly do you plan to do that? If you can’t answer it in a detailed manner, you need to change your plan.
Getting from point A to point D is easy by simply following points B and C. But what about B1, B2, C1, and C2? Yes, there are sub-steps in every plan, and you need to know what they are so you’ll know what to do.
The point that I’d like to make here is clarity. You need to be clear about what you exactly want and how you can exactly achieve it.
ENJOYING THE STILLNESS
There’s what we call a ‘me’ time. It’s your own time to engage yourself in the activites that you enjoy the most. It’s pretty interesting to know that some of the most successful people in the world enjoy their ‘me’ times in a rather unexpected way.
Take Warren Buffet, for example. When he’s not working his way through the investing world, he’s busy playing the ukulele. Jack Ma, the founder of Alibaba, is known to sing rock songs a la concert before his employees. Others enjoy their personal time by travelling, playing video games, or bonding with their family and friends.
The point of you having a ‘me’ time is to rejuvenate. Remember that being always on the go can drain you. You need to re-focus; you need that moment of peace.
THINKING POSITIVE
This is one of my advocacies because I believe that it contributes a large chunk towards success achievement. Your mind is too powerful to be under-utilised. If you tell it to think that the world around you is bleak, then it will believe that things are bleak. And when it does that, you’re prone to engage in actions that will eventually prove that the world is really bleak.
That’s the Law of Attraction at work. The principle of ‘like attracts like’ is very applicable. Try it out by thinking about positive things. And you’ll notice how positive things seem to gravitate towards you. I used the term ‘seem’ because in reality, it’s your mindset that affects your perceptions.
Now, in the real world, things and people will happen to you. Some of them will try to challenge your views and some will even tell you that you’re nuts. Ignore them. If you’re too focused on achieving success, the right way to do it is to approach it with the right mindset. And one way to do that is to hang out with like-minded people. Trust me, they’re out there, and they’re about to change the world.
